History of Meningie
Meningie is a picturesque lakeside town with a population of approximately 1000 people. With surrounding areas providing a sanctuary for native wildlife, rare costal flora and more than 200 species of birds.
Meningie derived from the Ngarrindjeri word meaning “mud” is located on the shores of Lake Albert. Meningie and Lake Albert is situated on the southern end of the mighty River Murray. The Water that enters the river systems travels down stream between NSW and Victoria crossing the boarder to South Australia were it continues down to Wellington and empties into Lake Alexandrina. From Lake Alexandrina fresh water spills into Lake Albert and then empties into the Coorong & Southern Ocean. The Coorong and Lakes support a world recognised sustainable fishing industry and provides irrigation to a thriving dairy industry.
