History of Meningie's Hospitals

Top level Hospital

In 1919 Meningie had the services of a District Nurse (always called Sister). The Sister would walk from patient to patient over terrible roads and tracks in all weather conditions. Shortly after, the Sister was provided with a small two-bed hospital (Wadmore House) to which she could admit patients, here the sister also lived instead of boarding somewhere in town.

Meningie's First Hospital "Wadmore House"
When the sister was attending patients outside of hospital a housemaid was employed to administer to the needs of the hospital patients. As well as attending to outside patients, the Sister had to chop her own wood for the stove , milk a cow twice a day and then turn the milk into butter (the butter was sold to provide extra income for the hospital) and she also grew her own vegetables.

Meningie's Second Hospital
The first hospital (Wadmore House) was vacated in 1944 and another building near the hotel became the second hospital. This hospital also had two beds for patients, but was still subject to many of the inconveniences encountered in the former hospital. The District Bush Nursing Society Hospital served Meningie until 1964 when it closed under frustrating circumstances.

Early in 1961 the people of Meningie decided to raise money for a new and larger third hospital which was opened in 1969. It soon become apparent that eight beds was not enough so year by year it was gradually enlarged until at its peak operated with 30 beds for patients.

Today the hospital provides many services for the community. The hospital consists of 10 Aged Care Beds, 14 Acute Beds, Theatre services provided through visiting specialists, 24 hour Emergency Department, Community Health Centre, Outreach Services and great nursing care. We also provided Health Centres for community use at both Coonalpyn & Tintinara.
